If you’ve not heard of Native Instruments Massive over the last decade, you would have definitely heard it’s power in a piece of music somewhere along the line. Scenic boasts five effect processors, over 100 multi-sampled instruments and effects and expressive performance controls. This soft-synth offers atmosphere by the bucket load, with hybrid sample playback and granular synthesis rolled into one. Scenic is described as the perfect instrument to deliver “thrill-inducing electronic rhythms, mood-setting orchestral textures and morbid drones for blockbuster impact”.

Scenic was introduced with Reason 11 this year, available both as a plug-in instrument and included in the full version of Reason. If this was your favourite soft-synth of the year, vote for it! There are Filter and Distortion blocks plus plenty of Utilities, making this a highly creative synthesiser with unheard of flexibility. The Generators highlight the flexibility on offer – basically this synth is anything you want it to be – and comprise Analog, Noise, Sampler and Wavetable. You add your own Generators, Modulators and Effects to very much create your own bespoke synth set-up. Phase Plant is a modular synth but not quite the one you might be thinking of.

However it was not quite complete (Komplete?) enough to steal the crown (although v1.1 looks like the update we all want) and instead that honour goes to the lesser known company Kilohearts. 2019 was a great year for soft synths, and one where Native’s Massive X stole the headlines.
